Microsoft Acquires Skype

Microsoft’s $8.5 billion acquisition of Skype is the biggest technology deal so far this year, and the transaction would rank among the 12 biggest high-tech deals since 2000.

A 10 percent rise in broadband penetration is linked to a 1.3 percent increase in economic growth, according to the World Bank. Some farmers in South Africa are already benefiting from the service, gaining access to real-time crop prices. However, more drastic steps are still needed to ensure the expansion of the service, Africa Analysis said in a recent research note. “Literacy levels in Africa remain too low to attract considerable demand for broadband access at the consumer level,” the firm said. “Much work remains to be done to raise literacy levels, both normal and digital, in order for consumers to realise the benefit of being universally connected.”

Why not reverse that. Rather than waiting for literacy levels to rise, what about tying broadband access to an African consumer demand for the education needed for social mobility? What if education and advancement are increasingly accessed via broadband access and platforms like Skype? The May 9 clip from CBS 42 news report shows 10 students from Birmingham, Alabama, and 10 students from Johannesburg, South Africa, learning from one another via Skype.

The Lamborghini Estoque 4-door sportscar sedan started off as a concept vehicle that debuted at the 2008 Salon d’Automobiles in Paris, and now it has been announced that the vehicle will go into production. Looks like it will be priced around $200k and be direct competition to the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide.
