Tech World – How Nigeria May Save BlackBerry
It is no secret that BlackBerry is a far greater force in the developing world than it is in its home continent of North America. BlackBerry blast-off Growth in Nigeria is about to make South Africa look like a slow Sunday at the sewing machine store. Sales outside North America make up 70% of total revenue, and regions making the biggest contribution to that chunk of income include South Africa, Indonesia, and Mexico. Soon, Nigeria may be added to the list. BlackBerry is already the number one smartphone brand there, but in a tiny smartphone market – which comprises less than 5% of the phone market. And that is without having direct representation on the ground.
In the next two months, a BlackBerry office will open in Lagos, and Nigeria will become a specific target market. The news was revealed by Robert Bose, head of RIM for Central Europe, Middle East and Africa, at the recent BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, Florida. The significance cannot be overstated. Even with only 5% of the mobile market being smartphones.
Dele Momodu – Between Don Jazzy And D’banj
Fellow Nigerians, please let’s leave politics for this week and discuss my primary constituency, showbiz. I’m always happy to see young people break barriers of poverty through creativity. This is why I have invested materially and otherwise in our talented youths since 1989 when Sir Shina Peters broke record charts with his monster album, Ace. I doubt if any other album has recorded such monumental success. For the first time, a Juju artiste captured all the major awards and took the front page of Nigeria’s biggest-selling Weekend Concord, edited at the time by Mike Awoyinfa. SHINAMANIA was the headline of my story and this became the title of Sir Shina’s next album.

Nigeria’s Yinka Shonibare sets record in London
Apr 29, 2012 General
A piece of artwork featuring a ship in a bottle which appeared on Trafalgar Square’s Fourth Plinth has found a permanent home.
Yinka Shonibare’s Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle was on display in London between May 2010 and January 2012. Following a successful public appeal for funds and an Art Fund grant, the work will go on permanent display at the National Maritime Museum in London.
The scaled-down replica of HMS Victory will be on view from 25 April. This coincides with the Greenwich museum’s 75th anniversary. Along with a £50,000 from the Art Fund, the public raised the necessary funds – £362,500 – to enable the museum to acquire the work and put it on permanent display.
The museum itself contributed £49,100 to the effort, matched by London’s Stephen Friedman Gallery, on behalf of Shonibare. “I am absolutely delighted and touched by the public’s generosity,” said British-Nigerian artist Shonibare. “It is testimony to the importance of keeping Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle in the country,” he added.
DAVIDO FLAUNTS 10 MILLION NAIRA CHEQUE ON TWITTER, CALLS IT “CHANGE”
Teenage singing sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido yesterday showed the whole world how much money Nigerian artistes are making, and more importantly displayed his financial worth for the world to see.
The pop singer posted the picture of a 10 Million Naira cheque he had just received on Social media, Twitter “Great meeting, made a lil change” he tweeted. I really wonder what his manager is doing, displaying his financial worth and status in this “Kidnapping age” in Nigeria is one risk too many.
Davido is one of the fastest rising stars in Nigeria, just 19 years of age, he has been able to penetrate into the Nigerian music industry with ease. His hit single “Dami Duro” is one of the most popular songs in Nigeria at the moment. He is the current face of telecommunication giants MTN.
